Tsakane – Lazaros ”Loverboy” Sumbane, a qualified hairdresser, who was the runner-up at the recent Black and Lovely Golden Scissors 2016 awards, thinks of himself as a vibrant and creative person.

He was also the audience’s choice award winner and received a cash prize, as well as Dark and Lovely hair products.

He has been competing in hairstyling competitions since 2012 and has won several awards.

“I have never left any hairstyling competition without winning a prize or an award,” he says.

Hairstylists from all over SA entered, but only 10 stylists qualified to represent their region.

Lazaros says it was a nine-month, nationwide search for the winner, led by a panel of judges, which included award-winning hairstylists and industry experts.

Eight regional finalists participated in an educational boot camp, with the head of the Dark and Lovely Academy, Mimmi Biggar, and the technical manager, Hanson Ndabeni.

The finals were quite a challenge and each contestant had to interpret the ”heritage” theme with two hairstyles – a freestyle cut and Avant-garde.

Lazaros chose the Tsonga culture to demonstrate his cutting skills in the freestyle and the creative Avant-garde hairstyle.

“The competition was tough, but I thank God that I managed to get second and third places,” he says.

He is also grateful for the two models, Precious Mothoa and Tshepiso Sethibang, who allowed him to exercise his creativity with their hair.

His advice to upcoming hairstylists is to “leave your comfort zone, go out and challenge yourself and your business”.

Lazaros won the Sofn’Free 2015 HairXperts Masters Challenge Viewers’ Choice Award.

He also took first and second places at the National Championship for the Employer’s Organisation for Hairdressing, Cosmetology and Beauty Champion in 2014.

Besides being rewarded with the Ekurhuleni Community Award for Best Hairstylist in 2014, he also won the Best Hair Salon category.
